Whether it’s injecting characters like Forrest Gump into real life historical situations or just pulling a Tarantino and completely changing the course of true events, there’s always room to mess around with the details. Sometimes it’s as simple as a change in who occupied a major world power after World War II, and other times we get the Beatles poofing out of existence. In this video we’ll dig into the most notable examples of movies rewriting history, like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, as well as more obscure cult favorites like Six-String Samurai and Richard Kelly’s critically reviled (at the time) Donnie Darko follow up, Southland Tales. For the anime fans in the audience, we even get into Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, which among other things features some visually impressive armor. Sure, it’s fascist military police armor, but it’s still cool! Speaking of cool, we’ve got two doses of Tarantino, but we easily could have made it three with Django Unchained, but that film makes pretty small changes to history in order to get its story across. We also skip a few other notable examples in favor of lesser known fare, so sadly we had to skip out on discussing Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Never Let Me Go, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Red Dawn, Captain America: The First Avenger, and of the smaller films we could have included, The Confederate States of America just barely missed the cut.
