How Video Games Took Over The Big Screen

The rise of Video Game franchises in the movie industry Subscribe: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Screenrant Video game movie adaptations have long endured the reputation that they simply cannot be done well. That is, until Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Uncharted fan film demonstrated that it could be done, and it could even appeal to their harshest audience, gamers. In this Screen Rant Doc, we look back on the troubling production that was the Super Mario Bros. film and the remarkable achievement that was 1995’s Mortal Kombat. We also speak with director Allan Ungar regarding his Uncharted fan film, and compare that production to other video game films. We also compare the production mindset and styles of adaptation for these films, and use Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog as a case study for how to adapt a video game property into a film. Our goal is to answer the question, how do you make a video game adaptation good, and how do you make it a film that gamers will enjoy. Do you simply leave the source material completely unchanged? Do you loosely adapt it while retaining certain elements? Or is it only important to get the character right and just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks?
